If this old school slow-burning crooner seems a little too vintage to be from 1969, it’s because it is. The Dells originally recorded it in 1956 when it became a regional hit in their native Chicago. Unfortunately, bass vocalist Chuck Barksdale wasn’t on the record, so he persuaded the group to re-record the song 13 years later. Adding an opening monologue and Barksdale’s own bass vocals, while Bobby Miller capitalized on the production strides that America’s musical landscape had undergone over the course of all of that time. The result was a national Top 10 hit that Rolling Stone went on to rank as the 263rd Greatest Song of All Time.
Lyrics:
Oh what a night, to love you, dear Oh what a night, to hold you near Oh what a night, to squeeze you, dear That's why I love you so! Oh what a night, to love you, dear Oh what a night, to walk you, dear Oh what a night, to kiss you, dear That's why I love you so! I won't forget all those things You have told to me The craze in my heart Won't let me forget your love Oh what a night, to love you, dear Oh what a night, to hold you near Oh what a night, to squeeze you, dear That's why I love you so! Oh what a night, to love you, dear Oh what a night, to want you, dear Oh what a night, to kiss you, dear That's why I love you so!
