According to Krist Novoselic, Spank Thru is the first ever Nirvana song recorded. It was first recorded for the Fecal Matter demo "Illiteracy Will Prevail" in December 1985. As of 2006 it remains the only unreleased song from the Dale Crover-sessions (January 23, 1988 at Reciprocal Recording Studios in Seattle). Another studio version, rerecorded with Chad Channing on drums, was released in 1988 on a vinyl LP box set of bands on the Sub Pop label. The box set was called Sub Pop 200. The 3xEP box set was released in December 1988. CD versions were first released in 1990 and there are three versions of Sub Pop's American CD. The real theme of this song is mockery of love and using masturbation as a substitute when you can't find anyone to have sex with you. Such lyrics as "We'll be together once again my love I need you back oh baby baby" and "I can spank it, I can beat it, masturbate it" make this theme known.
