“Writer In The Dark” serves as as a vocally powerful, stripped back ballad in which Lorde laments that, while she’ll love her ex forever, she will still move forward. As a singer/songwriter, Lorde is the writer in the dark. In a podcast on the subject of this album, Lorde commented on her identity as the writer: "It’s not a historical document. It’s not a police record. It’s not journalism. I didn’t go to journalism school. I’m a writer. It’s about what I felt and sometimes you can feel an element of guilt or ‘Oh God, I shouldn’t have immortalised that person’, but the song is my way of saying ‘It’s what I’ve always been. It’s what I was when you met me. It’s what I will continue to be after you leave. That’s exactly what was going to happen when you kissed a writer in the dark." The song was produced and written by Lorde with Bleachers lead singer Jack Antonoff, and serves as the 8th track from Lorde’s second studio album Melodrama. The track was released alongside the album on June 16, 2017.

[Verse 1] Break the news—you're walking out To be a good man for someone else Sorry I was never good like you Stood on my chest and kept me down Hated hearing my name on the lips of a crowd Did my best to exist just for you [Pre-Chorus] Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark Now she's gonna play and sing and lock you in her heart Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark [Chorus] I am my mother's child, I'll love you 'til my breathing stops I'll love you 'til you call the cops on me But in our darkest hours, I stumbled on a secret power I'll find a way to be without you, babe [Verse 2] I still feel you, now and then Slow like pseudo-ephedrine When you see me, will you say I've changed? I ride the subway, read the signs I let the seasons change my mind I love it here since I’ve stopped needing you [Pre-Chorus] Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark Now she's gonna play and sing and lock you in her heart Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark [Chorus] I am my mother's child, I'll love you 'til my breathing stops I'll love you 'til you call the cops on me But in our darkest hours, I stumbled on a secret power I'll find a way to be without you, babe I am my mother's child, I'll love you 'til my breathing stops I'll love you 'til you call the cops on me But in our darkest hours, I stumbled on a secret power I'll find a way to be without you, babe
